Over the years, the way we work has evolved, with more professionals embracing remote and hybrid working. Our research shows that over 80% of people now work from home at least part of the week, and many spend the majority of their working week outside the office.

For me, I don’t work from home often—it’s just not my natural environment. I prefer the buzz of the office, where the structure, collaboration, and in-person energy help me stay at my best. That said, there are times when working remotely is unavoidable, and I’ve realised that a bit of preparation can make those days more productive.

So, whether you’re like me and only occasionally work from home, or if it’s a regular part of your routine, here are some tried-and-tested tips that can help you make the most of it:

Create a Dedicated Workspace

Even if it’s just a corner of a room, having a dedicated space for work can make all the difference. When I work from home, I need a proper desk and chair to help me focus and stay comfortable.

Limit Distractions

I find it crucial to minimise distractions, whether that’s setting household tasks for breaks or using music instead of TV for background noise. It’s all about keeping your head in the game.

Stick to a Routine

Just because I’m at home doesn’t mean I abandon structure. I dress for work, set clear hours, and always end the day with something to signal I’m off-duty—whether it’s cooking dinner or heading to the gym.

Take Regular Breaks

I’ve learned the hard way that staying glued to your desk doesn’t help. Taking a proper lunch break or a quick walk keeps me energised and focused.

Stay Connected

When I do work from home, I make an effort to stay in touch with my team. A quick video call or message keeps me in the loop and avoids that isolated feeling.

Use the Flexibility to Develop

Occasional remote working gives me time to focus on personal growth. Online training or catching up on industry insights can be a great way to use that extra flexibility.

Network Online

When I can, I join virtual networking groups to connect with others in my field. Sharing ideas and meeting new people keeps me inspired and sharp.

While working from home might not be my preferred setup, these habits have helped me stay productive and focused on the days I need to do it. Hopefully, they’ll work for you too!
